Steve is an actuary with wide ranging pensions advisory expertise. As well as being the appointed scheme actuary to a number of defined benefit schemes, he has experience in areas such as corporate consultancy, investment strategy review exercises, pension taxation and executive pension benefits.

His aim is to provide pragmatic and straightforward advice and to communicate complex subjects in a way that can be easily understood. Combined with his wide-ranging experience, this makes him the trusted adviser to a number of clients who want their pension arrangements to run quietly and competently, leaving them to focus on their key decision making responsibilities.

Steve sits on BW's Actuarial Consulting Board, which is responsible for client service and future strategy for this business area. He is prominent in the industry, and is the current President of the Society of Pension Professionals. He also chairs a steering group for research sponsored by the Actuarial Profession into future pension plans that seek greater risk sharing in retirement.

Steve has a particular focus on the charities and not-for-profit sector. Around half his scheme actuary clients are in this sector, and he has advised a large number of charities participating in sector-wide multi-employer pension arrangements.

Significant experience:

  • overseeing the full range of services provided to trustee boards, ensuring a joined-up approach in the day-to-day operation of pension schemes
  • advice to trustees on integrated funding and investment strategies, including the implementation of appropriate de-risking frameworks
  • assisting trustees in funding negotiations with their sponsoring employer and with the mitigation of sponsor covenant risks
  • advice on risk transfer options, including preparing for and executing bulk annuity contracts and overseeing scheme wind-up projects.
